Caption character counter

Paste a caption. See exactly how it'll display on Instagram, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, and Threads.

What this tool does

Every platform truncates captions differently. Instagram cuts at 125 characters in the feed, but allows 2,200 in full. X caps at 280. LinkedIn shows a 'see more' at 210 on mobile, with 3,000 allowed in full. TikTok went from 150 to 4,000. The wrong assumption costs you the most important sentence in your post — the one that decides whether a viewer taps 'more'.

How to use it

  1. Paste a caption.
  2. See live character counts across every major platform.
  3. See the exact preview of what's visible before the 'see more' cut on each.
  4. Edit until the most important line is above the cut everywhere it matters to you.

Why it matters

The first 125 characters of your Instagram caption are 95% of what gets read. Most of your audience never taps 'more'. Get the hook into that window or accept that most of your caption is invisible to most of your audience.

Frequently asked

Questions people actually ask.

How often do the platform limits change?

More often than you'd think. We update this tool when platforms change. As of this writing: Instagram 2,200 / X 280 / LinkedIn 3,000 / TikTok 4,000 / YouTube 5,000 / Facebook 63,206 / Threads 500.

Do hashtags count against the limit?

Yes. Every character including #s, @s, line breaks, emoji, and spaces.

What about line breaks in the truncation preview?

Each platform handles them differently. Instagram preserves them; X collapses single line breaks; LinkedIn preserves them. The previews shown here mirror current platform behaviour.
